Gil Vince's plans for a ranch in Wyoming blow up in his face when he finds himself the head of a crew made up of an Oriental man with a wounded leg, a young woman who detests Gil, a lonely orphan boy, a widow with a new baby, and a three-legged dog named Mutt. With only this unlikely group to help him, Gil has to push two thousand hard-headed goats across three hundred miles of Texas wilderness to market in San Antonio. For thirty days, Gil and his motley crew fight storms, wolves, and flooding rivers, only to lose the herd to rustlers three days out of San Antonio. In a situation like this, Gil knows only one answer. But to his surprise, he learns he isn't alone.
Kent Conwell grew up in the Texas Panhandle, in the town of Wheeler, population 848. When his family moved to Fort Worth, he spent many hours at the stockyards, but he still managed to earn his bachelor's degree. After moving to Port Neches, Texas, Kent married, earned a master's and a Ph.D., and achieved a successful career in education, but his love for writing and the west never waned. Over the years he has won short story, screenplay, mystery, and western fiction awards.
Painted Comanche Tree is Kent's tenth book for Avalon.
