An Interview with
Donna Wright |
How long have you been writing and how long did it take to get published?
I have been writing for about 30 years. Of course, that means I started in my teens, which I did. However, got really serious after meeting the Smoky Mountain Romance Writers. That was in 1997. So, really since then, even though I have a finished manuscript that pre-dates it.
Have you ever used real people as characters?
Lots of times. But, only their looks, never a real personality and I don’t use people I know. I build a cast from photos of celebrities.
Where do you get ideas for plots?
90% of the time, it starts with seeing a man and thinking, “What kind of trouble can I get into with him?” I always try to figure out how the hero and heroine meet, and then what keeps them apart.
How did you start writing?
I fell in love with Donny Osmond as a teenager and wrote stories about him...ur, us. Someone asked me recently when I got over him. My answer, soon, I hope.
What’s the hardest part of writing?
Keeping my bum in the chair!!!
How do you develop your characters?
Although I don’t stay totally true to it, the Archetype book that Tami Cowden co-wrote is very helpful.
What can you tell us about your latest book for Avalon?
The latest Avalon book is VERDICT: LOVE. It is the final chapter of the Tennessee: Love Series and a recurring character, Hugh Cramer and Joey the Pig both end up with long lasting loves.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Or for anyone wanting to submit to Avalon?
Sweet romance is hard because every one thinks it’s just romance without sex. That’s not true. It’s romance to the core. Stories that depend on characterization and conflict to keep the reader turning the page. My advice would be to stay away from clichés, write realistic dialogue, and write something that you enjoy. If you don’t love your story, no one else will.
When do you find time to write?
I write in the evenings, between 6 and 10. Not all that time, but sometime between there, usually for an hour or more.
What are you working on now?
I am working on something for which I’m not contracted, so I’ll just say it’s Inspirational.
What do you do for fun - other than writing?
I love movies! I will see 3 movies on the big screen this year, SPIDERMAN 3, PIRATES 3, AND HARRY POTTER 5. I can’t wait!!!
