An Interview with
Kathleen
Fuller |
How long have you been writing and how long did it take to get published?
I started writing in January, 2001. My first novella was accepted for publication a year later and released in 2003.
How do you name your characters?
It varies from story to story. Sometimes I use favorite names—my first heroine was named Annika because I really loved the name. Other times I choose names that “fit” the character—like Luke Jackson in Santa Fe Sunrise. Luke seemed like a western name to me, and a strong name. Luke is a strong character.
What’s the hardest part of writing?
Writing! The discipline of it, making sure you put your rear end in a chair and write. Persevering in the face of rejection—that’s tough too.
How do you develop your characters?
By the seat of my pants. They develop throughout the story. Sometimes I’ll do a brief character chart, but for the most part I just let them evolve as I write the first draft. Doing it this way causes more rewrites, but it’s also exciting to see how a character “grows up” right before my eyes—or fingertips, as the case may be.
Are you working on anything else for Avalon?
Oh yes! Currently I’m working on a regency romance centered on a mystery. I also want to write another sequel to my upcoming book San Francisco Serenade. I have a few other ideas too—I’m never at a loss for ideas!
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Or for anyone wanting to submit to Avalon?
Write. Submit. Then write and submit again. Know your market and who you’re targeting. Get in a good critique group if you can. Don’t let rejection and negative opinion keep you from your goal. Believe in yourself and your writing.
What are you working on now?
In addition to my books for Avalon, I’m working on a TV script and a pilot. I’d like to try my hand at writing for television. Who knows—my stories may end up on a small screen near you!
