An Interview with
CJ Love

How long have you been writing and how long did it take to get published?
I’ve been writing since June 10, 2000. I remember the day exactly. I’d turned on a CD of Yanni while I sat at the breakfast counter. I picked up a pen and jotted the first scene of For the Love of Murphy. The book will publish August 2009, so it took me 9 years to publish.

How do you name your characters?
It is one of my favorite things to do, name characters. I knew I’d name a character Cole Hannible years before I wrote A Horse Called Hustle. Also, in every book I’ve added the names of my daughters somewhere: Mary and Sarah. Look for them. In the book Ring Around His Heart, the name Margie Walker is my daughter Mary again. Mary Margaret (Margie) Walker. Cat Walker is for Sarah Cathryn (Cat) Walker.

How did you start writing?
When I was very young I wrote stories about the people who lived in my mirror. I dabbled in poetry. In Ring Around His Heart my talent is obvious. Ring of mine, pink in hue, bring me love that sticks like glue. What? Oh, come on, that’s deep.

What’s the hardest part of writing?
The first draft. They are always horribly written and tedious - it’s a wonder I carry on afterward. To muddle through, I eat chocolate. But once I get the initial story down on paper, the second, and all the way through to the thirtieth draft, is a breeze.

What can you tell us about your latest book for Avalon?
Well, I submitted For the Love of Lauralee recently. It is the sequel to For the Love of Murphy. A tag line would read: Just because Dante Quinn doesn’t believe in gypsy magic doesn’t mean he isn’t cursed.

When do you find time to write?
At 4:00 a.m. Every day. I write until 6:30 a.m. and then get ready for work. I also dedicate most Saturdays to writing.

What are you working on now?
I have four manuscripts I’m working on - I’m not kidding. I started with a notebook, tabbed four sections: Land of Black, A Quiet Answer, Barbershop Duet, and Diamondback King. I write out plots, conversations, and character sketches. The other day I looked at Diamondback King and realized I have about 30,000 words already written. That was fabulous news to me. The book is more than half-written. That deserving of another piece of chocolate.
