An Interview with
Cynthia
Danielewski |
Where do you get ideas for plots?
Ideas can come from anything, at anytime. Visiting a certain location and taking in the atmosphere, attending an event, or simply daydreaming. Writing mysteries, I tend to look for ideas for books wherever I go.
How did you start writing?
I’ve always had a love for books, but it wasn’t until after I graduated from college that I sat down to write a novel. I can’t say what caused me to write because I honestly don’t know. It was just something that I wanted to do. And since I’ve always been drawn to mystery/suspense, it seemed natural to write in that genre.
What inspires you to write?
I realized with the completion of my first book that I enjoy writing fiction. It gives me a deep sense of satisfaction to complete a work.
What’s the hardest part of writing?
I learned early on that writing isn’t always easy. There are days when the words don’t flow. It’s easy to be distracted. It’s during those times when I really have to focus on my story, and break through the barrier that’s blocking my creativity.
How do you develop your characters?
Before I begin a book, I have a general idea of certain traits my characters will have. As the story evolves, the characters become more defined, and often take on a life of their own.
Are you working on anything else for Avalon?
I’m currently working on a book for The Detective Jack Reeves Mystery Series.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Or for anyone wanting to submit to Avalon?
Before submitting to any publisher, become familiar with their submission requirements and guidelines. Try and get a feel for what they look for in a manuscript by reading some of the books they’ve published. Be open to revisions on your work.
When do you find time to write?
When working on a book, I try to set aside time every day to write, review pages already written, or jot down notes on ideas. I find that my writing progresses at a much smoother pace if I stay in tune with my characters.
