An Interview with
Heather
S. Webber |
Have you ever used real people as characters?
Occasionally, I borrow characters from real life. My “villain” in Hearts Are Wild is actually a friend of mine who was gracious enough to let me fictionalize him. Sometimes, I’ll pick up bits and pieces of different people’s personalities and mold them together to make a memorable character.
How do you name your characters?
Naming characters is one of the best parts of being a writer. I can’t say exactly how I come up with a name (it’s just there), but I know what I like and know what I don’t like.
Where do you get ideas for plots?
I get plot ideas everywhere! From the evening news to fairy tales. For my River of Dreams series with Avalon, inspiration hit when Tall Stacks, a steamboat festival, came to town. Ta-da! A story was born. Three, actually.
Plot ideas are like germs: They’re everywhere, and they can pop up and infect you from unexpected directions.
What inspires you to write?
For the most part, it’s those voices in my head begging me to tell their stories. My family continues to inspire me, too. Every time one of my kids says, “My mom writes books,” with that tinge of pride in their voices, it makes me want to run to my computer.
What’s the hardest part of writing?
The waiting, for me, is the hardest part of writing. It’s not uncommon to send something into a publishing house and not hear on it for a year or more. It gets very frustrating.
What can you tell us about your latest book for Avalon?
My latest book for Avalon is called Hearts Are Wild and is the final book in the River of Dreams trilogy. In it, Jack Parker must choose to trust her heart or gamble away love forever.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Or for anyone wanting to submit to Avalon?
My advice to aspiring writers is to believe in yourself and believe in your work. If you don’t, no one else will either.
What are you working on now?
I’ve just begun a new romance novel which will hopefully be done by the end of summer. I also write mysteries for another publishing house and am busy with those, too. For more information on all my books, pop on over to my website www.heatherwebber.com.
