An Interview with
Patricia
DeGroot
Patricia DeGroot Photo
When did you first start writing?
I began writing when I was eight years old. I remember my school teacher giving an assignment to write what we did over summer vacation and it was as if a light bulb went off in my head. From that point on I knew I wanted to be a writer. I began my professional career as a copywriter, writing ads, brochures, radio commercials, newspaper articles, etc. It was years later that I was able to begin writing fiction exclusively.

Where do you get your ideas?
Everywhere. The Season of the Wilde Flowers series came to me one spring day when I was watering my lawn and noticed all the wildflowers beginning to bloom. I’ve awakened in the middle of the night with a new plot shaping in my mind. Or when I’m driving down the street. Something will strike me and I’ll begin to weave it into a story.

What inspires you to write romance?
I believe in enduring love, that good can triumph over evil and that we can have happily ever-afters. And I want women to feel satisfied about what they read.

What is the most rewarding thing about your writing?
I have readers who write me to thank me for touching on a topic that they have been struggling with. It is very rewarding when they say I’ve helped them see things differently or clearer, or that they are going to respond to their own situation just like one of my heroines did.

Are you working on anything else for Avalon?
There will be at least two more Season of the Wilde Flowers romances coming out, featuring the Wilde sisters’ cousins Red and Kit. The titles are HONOR’S REWARD and WISDOM’S PRIZE. We’re also discussing another series set in Victorian England.
